The reason most wallpaper will not strip easily is that nobody wanted to use a primer on the sheet rock before hanging the wallpaper. And some even thought if they used a wall size, that would do the trick. Well guess what, it did the trick alright. Wall size just made it stick even more. So, get the steamer and a 6 inch metal scraper and this should help remove the wallpaper. When you use the steamer, the wallpaper will peel off of the wall down to the sheet rock. Sometimes the front layer of the wallpaper will peel off and then you can soak down the backing that is left. Do this with a pump up sprayer with a wallpaper mixture in it and pull or scrape the backing off. Take your time, and try not to gouge the wall too much. Each time you gouge, you have to fix it. More work.
There are also other, more specific and unique types of wallpaper. Some of these are flock wallpaper, which is made with wool to give it a velvety feel and an elegant design; grass cloth wallpaper, which is made with different types of grass, and foil wallpaper, made with various metal foils. The disadvantage of these is that they are difficult to work with, and not very durable. Also, foil wallpaper will crease and bend, and highlight any flaw behind the wall that it is put on. Many people choose to apply wallpaper themselves. Depending upon the type of wallpaper, this can be quite easy. However, most home improvement companies will perform this service if you choose to go that route.
Your basic tools that you will need are: A plastic smoothing tool or a smoothing brush (I use the plastic), a sharp pair of scissors, a level, a measuring tape (at least 12), single edge or snap off blades (Lots of these), a 6" metal putty knife (for trimming along edges with your razor blade), some kind of table to paste and trim your wallpaper, a ladder (high enough to reach the ceiling without any danger of falling over, I use a 4 ladder for 8 and 9 ceilings). So, if I have not scared you off yet, let me try and explain how to install your new wallpaper. Always read the directions (I still do and learn something all the time, not to mention it saves my Butt if something goes wrong!)
When picking out the wallpaper, there are several things to remember. Shinny finishes on wallpaper will tend to highlight any texture or imperfections on the walls that are to be covered. If you are dealing with a textured wall, try and pick a wallpaper that will disguise (hide) the texture. The other option would be to have a sheet rock contractor come in a smooth out the texture. Some textures are less noticeable than others. Be aware that dark colored wallpapers will tend to show their seems slightly more that light colors. Large repeats in the pattern match will cause more waste and more wallpaper. Some wallpapers are pre-pasted and some are not. Wallpapers are sold in double rolls with widths ranging from 20 1/2"...27" and 36."

But you do want to include some accessories... A great way to put your room together is to add a few retro accessories that echo the style of your wallpaper. Try displaying some vintage posters on the wall or place retro light fixtures or retro clocks in the space. You can place a jukebox against a wall opposite to the wallpapered wall to balance the space. Create an interesting art piece by combining retro and contemporary items of a single theme, like a collection of fabric swatches or small mirrors. Even a classic furniture piece or two... Retro furniture that has stood the test of time with its quality and comfort works well in any space. In your contemporary living room, consider placing a classic retro furniture piece, like a wood and glass kidney-shaped coffee table or a leather Eames lounge chair. Keep it simple for greatest effect... Retro wallpaper can look great in a contemporary space all by itself. In fact, the key to successfully mixing decorating styles in a single space is to have one dominant style and to use the other style sparingly. Be careful when decorating your space that you do not have patterns that are competing or clashing with one another. Let the retro wallpaper design take center stage.
